The Easiest Natural Beauty Recipes: From Toothpaste to Lip Balm

natural beauty recipes diy chapstick

I set a personal goal to switch to all natural products by December 31st, 2016, which led to me testing out some all natural beauty recipes! I did this for a variety of reasons, but mostly because as consumers we overpay for products that are toxic to our bodies and to the environment.

This has led to me testing out all different recipes in search of the easiest, natural personal care recipes. Swapping out your everyday personal care products for all natural, homemade products is a great first step towards eliminating toxins from your lifestyle. For this reason, instead of keeping it to myself, I decided to record and share the best natural recipes as I try them right here! Check back as I’ll be adding to the list.

I may receive a commission if you purchase something linked in this post. See more details here.

Consider this your personal guide to getting rid of toxic store-bought products for natural products. Less expensive, better for your body, and more friendly to the planet.

Easy ChapStick + Lip Balm Recipe

No double boiler or stovetop needed – just a microwave and 2 ingredients.

Estimated time to make: 10 minutes

What You Need:

  • organic coconut oil (2 parts)*
  • organic beeswax in pellet or grated form (1 part)
  • lip balm container – You can buy or reuse ChapStick tubes or lip balm containers. A mini mason jar works too.

Optional additions:

  • – Add a few drops for natural SPF
  • essential oil – Add a few drops for scent and added healing properties. I like to use peppermint or lavender. Make sure you buy quality; I get mine here.
  • hibiscus or beet root powder or natural r that I used

How to Make It:

  1. Add beeswax pellets to a microwave-safe container that pours easily (a glass measuring cup is your best bet)*
  2. Melt the wax in the microwave in short bursts on low power – Try a few 20 second reps until the wax is melted down.
  3. Mix in coconut oil. Then add in your optional fun stuff.
  4. Pause for 10 seconds to let the mixture cool a bit before filling up whatever you’re using for lip balm containers or ChapStick tubes. Let them sit for a half hour or so before using.

*For example, I used 1 tablespoon of beeswax and 2 tablespoons of coconut oil to make about 7 tubes. The photo shows my first batch of ChapStick to give you a visual of how much that makes. These will each last well over 6 months to a year – you’ll have plenty to give away 🙂

**Use materials that you’ll only use for projects like this… It’s tough to get the wax/oil mixture off afterwards!

Easy Natural Deodorant Recipe

20160713_161836-01

This was one of the first products I replaced because of all the nasty stuff in store-bought deodorant (silica, parabens, skin irritating fragrances, and other harmful ingredients). Luckily, I found a few super easy natural deodorant recipes and took a minimalist approach to create the easiest deodorant recipe. Ever.

Estimated time to make: 15 minutes

What You Need:

  • coconut oil (6 tablespoons)
  • baking soda (1/4 cup or 4 tablespoons)
  • organic cornstarch (1/4 cup or 4 tablespoons)

You’ll also want something to keep it in – I used a small 8 ounce mason jar that works great, but you could also use an old deodorant container.

Optional additions:

  • essential oil – Add a few drops for a scent like peppermint or lavender. I bought mine here.

How to Make It:

  1. Mix the cornstarch and baking soda together
  2. Use a fork to mash in the coconut oil*
  3. Once mixed in, add your optional essential oils before putting the mixture in your container of choice

*If the coconut oil is too hard, run the jar under warm water to loosen it up

A few helpful notes:

  • For everyone worried about if a natural recipe will work in place of your deodorant + antiperspirant, check out this article. Basically, store bought deodorants don’t actually make you sweat less and your body eventually becomes immune to different brands. That beings said, it will take your body a couple of weeks to get used to not using your regular deodorant, but once you adjust you’ll notice you sweat less with little to no bad odor.
  • Everyone is different! This is just what worked for me. If this recipe doesn’t do the job for you, there are endless natural deodorant recipes out there, so keep testing different ingredients and ratios!
  • No sweat stains on clothing with this recipe.
  • The melting point of coconut oil is 77F (25C), so on hot days stick your deodorant in the freezer for a few minutes until it’s a consistency you like.
  • Use clean fingers to apply your new natural deodorant

Easiest Natural Toothpaste Recipe20160713_162026-01

I was excited to replace my toothpaste because now I don’t have to deal with toothpaste tubes that can’t be recycled! Not to mention the fact that store-bought toothpaste has lots of harmful chemicals. Here’s the easiest natural toothpaste recipe I’ve used and been brushing with ever since:

Estimated time to make: <10 minutes

What You Need:

  • organic coconut oil (2 tablespoons)
  • baking soda (1 tablespoon)
  • essential oil (15-20 drops) – I use peppermint essential oil from . Spearmint would work well too for that toothpaste taste.

How to Make It:

  1. Combine coconut oil, baking soda, and essential oil. You can do it right in the container you’ll be using – I used an 8 ounce mason jar.
  2. … That’s it! Brush as you normally would. I use a small spoon to apply the toothpaste to my toothbrush. If the toothpaste mixture is too hard, run it under some warm water. Too mushy, stick it in the freezer for a few minutes.

Let me know if you try any of these and how they work out! I’ll be adding to this list as I swap out other products.

  1. Definitely agree… When traveling, I always carry my stainless steel bottle. If I’m not far from home, I’ll sometimes bring a mason jar. I also only keep water in by stainless steel bottle to make cleaning easy 🙂

  2. Hello are using WordPress for your site platform? I’m new to the blog world but I’m trying to get started and set up my own. Do you require any html coding expertise to make your own blog? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  3. Hey there! I do use WP—I have some html skills, but it’s really not necessary to make a great blog. Just pick a theme you like and start! Anything can be found on YouTube if needed.
